S4 Phonetics is a simplified version of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and was a research project I worked on between 2011 – 2013. After helping to solidify much of the general UK and US usage of S4, the team worked on some learning materials in order to prove the concept could work in ESL classrooms. See all of the S4 symbols and their IPA equivalents here.)
Much of the materials that I developed were focused on drafting beginner and intermediate phonetic English books. These titles were very unique in the ESL market because they were written almost completely in phonetics. Therefore a learner would quickly start reading entire sentences like a native speaker, which is truly the holy grail of ESL training in many East Asian countries.
One book, which I published through Language Engineering, was a free iBook called “S4 Phonetic Sounds of English” and is available for download in iTunes.
